Panther groupers are exceedingly hardy and easy to care for fish, but they grow quite large and will eat anything (fish or crustacean) that will fit in their mouths. For this reason they are suited best to tanks with fish that are equal or larger in size to themselves. They will not eat coral, but may bump coral around in attempts to get at crustaceans among them. They have a very unique helicopter-like swimming pattern that draws many people to this interesting fish.
